The king of the underworld who rose from his throne to reach the seat of politics. There was a time when no one had the courage to confront Dawood and his gang. Then a man emerged from the corridors of Mumbai who became The Daddy of Dons. The king of the underworld who rose from his throne to reach the seat of politics. This is the story of the daddy of the Mumbai underworld. How a milk seller became the daddy of the underworld. Let’s know the story of Arun Gawli.
Arun Gawli was born in Maharashtra
On 17 July 1955, a child was born to Gulabrao and Laxmibai in Kopargaon of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Who later became the biggest name in the underworld. A name that earned enmity from Dawood. The police also started fearing him, the name is Arun Gawli.
Left studies and started selling milk
In 1950, Gawli’s father Gulabrao came to Mumbai with his wife Laxmibai in search of good employment. In childhood, Arun Gawli was like a normal boy. But fate changed. Arun Gawli’s father lost his job and Arun had to leave his studies and go door to door selling milk.
While selling milk, Gawli got to know every nook and corner of Mumbai and its people closely. These streets and neighbourhoods later became Arun Gawli’s biggest strength. Mumbai was changing in the 70s and 80s. The old dons of Mumbai were leaving their throne. New players like Dawood were emerging here.
Uncle always showed Arun Gawli the world of underworld
On the other hand, due to the stoppage of business of cotton mills in Mumbai, lakhs of people became unemployed in one go. One of them was Arun Gawli who had worked in SHAKTI MILLS, GODEREH BOYCE and CROMPTON GREAVES.
It is said that while working in CROMPTON GREAVES, Arun Gawli met Sadashiv Pawle alias Sada Mama. And it was Sada Mama who took Arun Gawli to the world of underworld.
Arun formed his own gang Underworld Don Arun Gawli
Then Arun decided to form a gang along with his school friend Rama Naik and gangster Babu Resham and B.R.A Gang was formed. A trio which decided to establish its dominance from Parel to Byculla. In those days, the influx of North Indian labourers in Mumbai was also increasing. Due to which the local Marathi youth started feeling that their livelihood was being snatched away. Arun Gawli thought of making this his weapon.
Gave an open challenge to Bhaiya Gang
At that time, Mohan Sarmalkar’s gang was dominant in Mumbai’s Byculla area. Mohan himself was a Maharashtrian. But many members of his gang like Parasnath Pandey, Kundan Dubey and Raj Dubey were North Indians. Arun Gawli knew that due to this, the local people did not like the Byculla gang. In such a situation, Gawli gave an open challenge to Mohan Sarmalkar to win the hearts of the people. Gawli started talking about driving out the North Indians from Mumbai and at the same time he started calling Sarmalkar’s gang Bhaiya Gang.
Became a hero among the local people
In Maharashtra, North Indians were often called Bhaiya. Actually this word is for elder brother. But in Mumbai it started being used to insult the people of UP-Bihar. Arun Gawli was the first person who openly challenged the Bhaiya gang and became a hero among the local people.
It is said that Shiv Sena’s famous slogan “Bhaiya Bhagao, Mumbai Bachao” was also inspired by Gawli’s work. Gawli also changed the name of his gang to Byculla Company. The result of this cleverness of Gawli was that the people of Byculla started considering him as the real Dada.

Gradually, Gawli’s stature increased. The enmity between Bhaiya Gang and Byculla Company or BRA Gang made the streets of the city red with blood. Crimes started happening openly on the streets. Names like Parasnath Pandey and Mohan Salmalkar were killed one by one. Now there was fear of Arun Gawli in the streets of Mumbai. During this time, there was a big stir in the underworld of Mumbai.
Dawood joined hands with Arun Gawli
Pathan gang killed Dawood Ibrahim’s elder brother Shabir Ibrahim. The death of his brother shook Dawood to the core and he joined hands with Arun Gawli to take revenge from the Pathan gang. Gawli’s Byculla company supported Dawood. The result of this friendship was that Pathan gang’s kingpin Karim Lala’s nephew Samad Khan and his brother Abdul Rahim Khan were brutally killed. By the year 1988, the situation was such that Arun Gawli had committed so many murders for Dawood’s D company that people started calling him Supari King.
He also established his foothold in the real estate world
During this period, he also became friends with Dawood’s right hand Chhota Rajan. But Gawli was not limited to bloodshed only. This don of Dagdi Chawl was now establishing his foothold in the real estate world. At that time, the police did not interfere in these disputes due to legal restrictions. In such a situation, Gawli would give protection to his contractor friends, solve their disputes and in return sometimes take a flat and sometimes half of the profit. This is how Arun Gawli became the owner of crores in a few years.
Dawood and Gawli’s friendship turned into enmity
But this crown of real estate turned Dawood and Gawli’s friendship into enmity. The year was 1988, when Gawli’s associate Rama Naik and Dawood Ibrahim’s special man Sharad Shetty clashed over a large piece of land in Jogeshwari. Insulted Rama insulted Dawood in front of everyone. Dawood also took his revenge by informing the police and getting Rama Naik killed in a police encounter.
The streets of Mumbai were stained with blood
After this Arun Gawli broke off his ties with G Company forever. This is where the gang war between Dawood and Gawli started which stained the streets of Mumbai with blood. Now both the gangs started targeting each other’s men
In this resentment, Gawli’s brother Kishore was also killed. After which Gawli got Dawood’s brother-in-law Ibrahim Parker killed. Now the gang war in Mumbai had reached its peak.
The attacks in Mumbai changed the map of the underworld
Meanwhile, on 12 March 1993, serial blasts took place in Mumbai. 12 blasts in which 257 innocent people died. More than 1400 people were injured. These blasts were carried out by Dawood and his associates with the intention of killing Hindus. This attack changed the map of the underworld forever.
After these blasts, there was a rift in D Company. Dawood’s right hand man Chhota Rajan separated from him. After this attack, police started shooting in Mumbai. Where big dons fled from Mumbai, Arun Gawni did not go anywhere from Mumbai. He stayed here and strengthened his fort. After which only one name started resonating in Mumbai and that was Arun Gawli.
