Recently, strong earthquake tremors were felt in Taiwan (Taiwan), due to which buildings suffered heavy damage. But even an earthquake of 7.4 magnitude could not cause much damage to a skyscraper. The name of this building is Taipei 101. According to CNN, the innovative design of this building, which stands tall even in earthquakes, is considered to be the reason for its strength. A large pendulum is also included in this design. Which is helpful in absorbing the shock of earthquake. This pendulum is installed in the building between the 87th and 92nd floors. Which is at a height of thousand feet from the ground. This tuned mass damper is about 660 metric tons heavy. According to the news outlet, this damper counteracts the movement of the building during earthquakes or strong winds and reduces their impact.
What is tuned mass damper?
It is also called wind damping ball. Which is installed in tall buildings so that the impact of strong winds on the building can be reduced. It also makes it easier to live in tall buildings. In many buildings they are installed in such a way that they are not visible from outside. But the damper installed in Taipei 101 is capable of preventing the impact on the building and also enhances its beauty. Because of which the tourists coming here can also understand this system easily.
How does it work?
According to the Taipei 101 website, when an earthquake, storm or any such natural disaster occurs, this circular damper starts moving from front to back. And, in this way it absorbs the impact of strong wind or earthquake to a great extent. Engineers of the damper claim that this damper reduces the movement of the building by forty percent. Due to which the people living inside it do not have to face much trouble. It is also visible in a closed circuit camera that during the earthquake, there is little movement in this tall building in Taipei, while a nearby building is shaking tremendously due to the earthquake.
