The festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated with great pomp across the country. In the mountains, it is celebrated as Duti Tyaar. According to the scriptures, it is said that Mother Yamuna is the daughter of Sun God and Yamuna, Yam, Shani Dev and Vaivasvat Manu appeared from two wives named Surya’s Chaya and Sanjna. Due to which Yamuna is called the sister of Yamraj and Shani Dev.
It is said that on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, Mother Yamuna invites her brother Yamraj to her residence Yamunotri. On the repeated request of Yamuna, Yamraj goes to his sister’s house. But before that, he frees all the residents of hell.
When Yamuna comes to know about this, she becomes very happy and says that the sister who applies tilak to her brother and feeds him on this day will never fear Yama. Since then, this festival named Yama Duti, Bhaiya Dooj or Bhaatri Tika is celebrated all over the country. The special importance of visiting Yamuna on this day is also described in the scriptures.
Duti Tyaar is celebrated with great pomp on Bhai Dooj in the mountains
This festival is celebrated in a unique way in Uttarakhand. On this day, the sister applies tilak to her brother with chuda. These chudas have to be prepared a few days before Duti Tyaar. To make chudas, the hill red rice is soaked, lightly fried and pounded in a mortar.
Due to which the rice shrinks and becomes double, these are called chudas. First of all, these chudas are consecrated by placing grass, raw turmeric and cow ghee. After this, it is offered in the temple and placed on the head of the family members as a blessing.
This is how Duti Tyaar is celebrated
On the day of Duti Tyaar, just like Harela, the sister holds the grass and chudas in her hand and touches her brother’s feet, knees and shoulders respectively and places those chudas on the head. This is done one to three times. While doing this, the sister blesses her brother –
May you live and stay awake
May you be as clever as the swayam, as strong as the garden
May you be as high as the sky, as wide as the earth
May you be as green as the grass and spread like air
As long as there is water in the Himalayas, as long as there is water in the Ganges
May you meet this day and this month
