It was the year 1962 when China suddenly attacked India with full preparation. The country was not ready for the sudden attack by China. An 18-year-old young soldier Hayad Singh Mehta was posted in India’s Pioneer Company on the China border in Assam. Hayad Singh Mehta faced the enemies till the last bullet to protect the country. He also spent six months in a Chinese prison. Now years later, Hayad Singh Mehta has remembered that time.
Hayad Singh Mehta, the brave warrior of the 1962 war
Hayad Singh Mehta is 84 years old today. He has shared his experience while remembering the India-China war. Even today, the same patriotic spirit is intact in Hayad Singh Mehta, a resident of Kaligaon in Lohaghat. Narrating the events of the 1962 war, he said that he was newly recruited in the Pioneer Company. After training, he was posted in the China border of Assam. There were 100 soldiers posted in his company.
In the year 1962, China suddenly attacked India and the Chinese soldiers, whose number was more than a thousand, suddenly attacked their post and the Indian army had very less ammunition. But despite this, they fought very bravely. But the number of Chinese soldiers was very high and they fought a very fierce battle.

Hyaad Singh Mehta said that we had killed a lot of Chinese soldiers. But many soldiers of our platoon were also martyred and many were injured. After many hours of fighting, our ammunition was over and we had nothing to eat. The high command ordered the platoon to leave the post. After this, we had to leave the post under compulsion.
He told that there were eight soldiers who kept wandering in the forests hungry and thirsty for 14 days. During this time, they somehow managed by eating grass and leaves in the forests. They filled their stomachs by eating the leftover ration in the houses of Lama people who had fled from their homes. But one day when they were wandering in the forests, more than three hundred Chinese soldiers surrounded them and took them hostage to China.
This is how Hayad Singh Mehta and all the soldiers returned to their homeland
When they reached China, they saw that more than four thousand Indian soldiers were taken captive. All the Indian soldiers were kept in groups of two hundred by the Chinese officers. During this time, all the Indian soldiers were questioned by the Chinese officers about the Indian Army but none of the Indian soldiers opened their mouth.
Hyaad Singh Mehta told that he had to stay in Chinese captivity with his comrades for about 6 months. Later, after the agreement between the two countries, they were released. He told that his family members also came to know after a month that they were trapped in the clutches of the Chinese Army.
Even today, at the age of 84, he has the same patriotic spirit
Hyaad Singh Mehta is today’s old and he is still filled with the same patriotic spirit. He says that if his platoon had sufficient ammunition, he would not have allowed the Chinese Army to enter the post. But still our platoon fought bravely and killed many Chinese. Every soldier fought bravely till the last bullet. In this battle, many of his comrades were martyred and many were injured. He said that the battle was very fierce. Hayad Singh said that even today if he gets a chance, he is ready to fight on the border.
