Red rice and kheer are being made from red rice on the mountains for years. Along with this, it is also used in worship. Along with this, pathav and chuda were made from red rice in Kumaon division. However, now this practice has reduced.

Red rice competes with Basmati rice. Red Chamyaad of Gangolihat, Thapchini of Nainital, Almora, Pithoragarh also tastes great. Whereas in Garud-Bageshwar and Baluwakot, China Four, Khajiya of Gangoli and Badpaso of Lohaghat are roasted and eaten.
