In the year 1969, Atal Bihari Vajpayee had reached Aligarh to address the rally of Bharatiya Jan Sangh. He was so simple that his commute was by train. He used to carry the briefcase of his belongings himself and the surprising thing was that he had only two pairs of dhoti and kurta. His briefcase used to contain a dhoti-kurta, underwear, a handkerchief and toothbrush.
During the election period of 1969, Atal reached Aligarh to address a rally but his clothes got dirty while attending the rallies. Now he had to address a rally in Aligarh but he could not address the rally in these dirty clothes. Then he got an idea and secretly opened the briefcase of his friend KL Gupta. In which he was seen keeping a pair of clean dhoti and kurta.
When Vajpayee borrowed dhoti and kurta for the rally
Atal Bihari Vajpayee told KL Gupta that today I will wear these clothes because I have to hold more rallies. On hearing this, KL Gupta said, I also have to hold a rally in Aligarh and I will not give this dhoti-kurta at all. On this, Atal explained to them and said, look, I am a big leader, if I address a rally wearing such dirty dhoti-kurta, then people will ask you that how is your leader addressing a rally wearing such clothes. You will also be insulted in this.
Anyway, your rally is in the evening, so by then you should get my dhoti and kurta washed and wear them. But KL Gupta did not listen to him. He went towards the bathroom saying that I will wear my own dhoti and kurta. Meanwhile, Atal wore his dhoti and kurta and went away laughing.
